The Henderson County Youth Leadership met today for their Local Government/ Public Safety Day. They started their day at the courthouse where County Mayor McCready talked to them about his role as mayor and gave them a tour of the courthouse. They were also able to participate in a mock County Commissioner meeting with Mayor McCready and Commissioner Andy Anderson. John James also stopped by to talk to students about his perspective of politics as a young person.
Next, they visited the LT Pie Hay Water Treatment Plant where General Manager Justin Roach gave them a tour and explained the filtration process that our water goes through from Beech Lake to our faucets. Students were able to watch water being tested and then taste water directly after filtration. They also talked about the importance of the water plant to our local economy.
Their last stop was at the Henderson County Sheriff’s Dept. where Sheriff Brian Duke’s team demonstrated many of the tools and techniques that they use in apprehension and detainment including a flash-bang, a sound shield, and taser gloves. Students were also able to tour the facility including the interview rooms, evidence room, courtrooms, and holding cells.

Day TWO of SPOTLIGHTING SHHS! Enjoy the rich history of the school!!
Today, we celebrate the history of Scotts Hill High School. School in the Scotts Hill community began in 1870 as a small log structure with split log benches and only a few books shared by all the students and one teacher. By the 1880s, a larger building was built and was full of students and teachers in no time. Scotts Hill College was also built in 1896. It was short-lived and closed in 1903 after their fearless leader, B.A. Tucker passed suddenly from Appendicitis. In the 1920s, Pauline Eason and Cecil Milam led the effort to create a senior high school, and in 1927, the senior high school began! The first four-year class graduated in March 1929. Their class motto was “And? Now?” and their class colors were green and white. Each class had its own colors back then.
- Paraphrased from The History of the Scotts Hill Schools by Gordon H. Turner, Sr. (from the 1976 yearbook)
Over the years, many different structures were built at Scotts Hill School, which housed kindergarten through 12th grade. The new school opened in Fall 2002, separating K -8 into Scotts Hill Elementary and 9-12 into a new building on the edge of Reagan and Scotts Hill - Scotts Hill High School. The Class of 2003 was the first to graduate in the new building. The newest addition was in 2021 when the new band room was built, and the outside classrooms that house our Agriculture department were enclosed.

This week we are SPOTLIGHTING the SCOTTS HILL LIONS! We hope you enjoy the celebration of Scotts Hill High School... established in 1927!
