Our first severe weather event is the EARTHQUAKE! An earthquake is what happens when two blocks of the earth suddenly slip past one another. The surface where they slip is called the fault or fault plane. The location below the Earth’s surface where the earthquake starts is called the hypocenter, and the location directly above it on the surface of the earth is called the epicenter. Interesting facts: It is estimated that there are 500,000 detectable earthquakes in the world each year. 100,000 of those can be felt, and 100 of them cause damage. Some very powerful earthquakes occurred along the New Madrid fault in the Mississippi Valley in 1811-1812. Reelfoot Lake is an 18,000- acre natural area located in Lake and Obion Counties in northwest Tennessee. The lake was created by a series of violent New Madrid fault zone earthquakes in the winter of 1811-1812. Alaska is the most earthquake-prone state and one of the most seismically active regions in the world.

Tennessee's Severe Weather Awareness Week (SWAW) will take place February 25-March 2, 2024. "Severe Weather Awareness Week is our opportunity to prepare before disaster strikes." This week students throughout the school will learn about different severe weather events that could affect our area. They will learn about causes, strategies to prepare, and ways to stay safe during these events. We are so excited about the week and all the interesting fun things happening in the building.

Angelman syndrome (AS) is a rare neurogenetic disorder that affects chromosome 15, resulting in intellectual and developmental delay. It affects about 1 in 15,000 people worldwide. Scotts Hill Elementary has the privilege of having 2 very special Angelman children. Since its creation in 2013, International Angelman Day has been the driving force in uniting AS families and patient organizations from all around the world around a common purpose – Angelman syndrome. The day is observed by over 50 charitable/support organizations based in over 40 countries around the world. These organizations are family-driven and all support people with Angelman syndrome, their families, caregivers, and service providers. They initiate and promote research for AS and create educational resources.
